I’ve done it! A complete new design to the home page on my WordPress training site! It’s an example of how you can make WordPress sites look amazing! (In my opinion).
Last week I posted about making decisions, moving on and not letting projects hold you back. So I had this feeling with wptraining.co I wanted the site to look like a website and not just a sales page. I’ve never really been a fan of long sales pages. I know they work, they convert but I wanted to change the process and make my sales page look different to the other types.
If you want to see what the new design is like go to wptraining.coNOT .com

Why this style of design?

I wanted something big and clean with Responsive design! I wanted to highlight the main benefits about the course, who it’s for, what they get, testimonials, guarantee etc. I think I’ve done just that using large sections to emphasise these points. It uses lots of white space with some graphics to break up the lines.
What do you think? Have I made it clear? Please comment below.

I also wanted to be different and not have a long boring sales page with text and graphics. Don’t get me wrong…. long sales pages do convert, they are quick to make and are highly effective but again I wanted to be different from all the rest.
I wanted to have a design which stood out and shows what you can build with WordPress.

Will it convert?

Only time will tell if it converts or not. I have to do lots of A/B split testing on different parts of the page. I also believe the content in my course is amazing. The videos are HD quality, mobile responsive (meaning the videos will adjust width and play on any mobile device) and I’m adding two new WordPress courses to the site.
If the content is good I think members will tell me and that social proof will help with conversions. It’s early days to judge anything yet. I’ve installed the usual tracking, webmaster tools and over the next week I’ll start testing.
In some ways I don’t care if the page doesn’t convert as well, I know this sounds stupid, but I love the design. If I’m happy with this project from the start I can put more energy into producing better content and helping the members build sexy WordPress sites.
I think I will eventually introduce a free mini course to help build some leads and give people a chance to see the videos and education quality.

Theme used

The whole site is built on WordPress (obviously) but it has lots of simple custom tweaks.
  • Genesis Framework – I’ve started using Genesis for all my sites. I used to like Thesis but since they updated to version 2 it’s now so complicated I’ve ditched it. Genesis is fast, one time purchase and has beautiful child theme designs.
  • Epik theme – This is a child theme which requires Genesis Framework. The default theme on its own looks a hundred times better than most sites on the web and it’s completely mobile responsive like most themes for Genesis. Get used to hearing the word mobile responsive.
That’s it. Nothing fancy for the sales page. Just CSS tweaks to change the colour and add images but most of the layout is the default in Epik.

Now the big question…

What do you think of it?
Any comment or suggestions for improvement?
